Bulgaria sits in the middle of a culinary crossroads. They have been influenced by many different cultures over their history. When looking at their food you can see the evidence of these cultures at work. Sitting on the overland spice trade route, they reaped the benefits greatly. Their cuisine is rooted in these deeply delicious spices. When you come to Sofia, Bulgaria, you get to see the Turkish influence, the Slavic influence, and the Greek influence.
The Turkish influence can be seen in their coffee. It is strong and bitter.

Sofia, Bulgaria has many coffee shops around and many places where you can get delicious pastries.
Among the pastries that you can try is the Banitsa, a flaky filled pastry originated in the Slavic Balkans.
The national dish of Bulgaria is the Shopska salad. The ingredients of this salad always display the colors of the Bulgarian flag, which is green, red, and white. While the Shopska salad is authentically Bulgarian, a Greek influence can be seen.
